Our Phenomenal Stay at Sala Lodges, Siem Reap

Sala Lodges may seem like an ordinary hotel to many, but it offers each guest a unique yet authentic Cambodian experience.  The eleven traditional wooden houses create a little village that can be found just a few kilometres from Angkor, and these architectural wonders were incorporated into Sala Lodges to ensure that the architectural style of Khmer houses would be available for future generations to see.

We stayed in number 5 Bram, which is The High House and it has quite the history. This house was constructed in 1985, but not where it is located now.  Instead, it was built over in Srü, in the Kompong Thom Province, which is approximately one hundred and fifty kilometers to the east of its current location.

The former owners, Neth Hour and his wife Sos Soeun, are both farmers on rubber tree and cassava plantations, and they lived in the house with their children. They sold this house so that they could build a larger one, and this house was brought to Sala Lodges and reconstructed in July of 2011.
We enjoyed staying in this quaint little house and we were thankful that the two single beds could be pushed together to make a double bed.  We didn’t have a need for the sofa bed, but it was nice to have another place to sit during the day.

Our private bathroom had a wonderful rain shower, which we put into use every time we wandered back in from exploring the area.  We seemed to spend most of the time that we were at our wooden home out on the large terrace.  We had spectacular views of the surrounding area from our terrace, and while it was quite high off the ground, we didn’t have any problems at all.  In fact, we think that it only added to the ambiance of our stay.

What We Considered Our WOW Moments

We loved that each wooden house was placed just far enough away from the others, because we had the privacy that we usually desire when on vacation.

We never needed to worry about having enough bottled water during our stay, because plenty was provided for us in our room and more was always available upon request.  In fact, most of what we needed during our stay was either given to us upon our arrival or we simply needed to ask, and it was delivered immediately.

The two on-site restaurants were both excellent and we chose to eat many of our meals in them after experiencing delicious cuisine on our first day.
